Basic Information:
  • The purpose of this group is twofold. Firstly, it is meant to help a person who is new to meditation to access states of calm and relaxation. Secondly, it is meant to deepen and expand your practice.

By following the meditation instructions given in the Anapanasati Sutta (translated as Mindfulness of Breathing), the you can take your practice to any level you want. Each of its areas has a depth that can literally be practiced for the entire lifetime without need for further instruction. However, a proper understanding and consistent practice is essential.

Remaining relevant for today's meditators, these timeless meditation instructions were provided some 2600 years ago by the Buddha. They encompass a total of sixteen steps which are considered to be progressive. The sixteen areas are categorized into four separate groups of study. These four groups are: the Body, Feelings, Mind States and the Dhammas.

As you do these meditations, you will realize that these practices will be both rewarding and challenging. They start with simple instructions relating to breath alone. They, then, move towards deeper, relational reflections concerning the activity of the mind. The instructions then progress towards the Buddhist teaching on the impermanence and the nature of reality.

In all of the sixteen steps, the breath is the primary subject and remains the most important part of the practice.
